Review: Serious Sam: Double D (PC)

We played Serious Sam: Double D on PC from Steam and boy did it sure bring back sweet, sweet memories of Contra. While the game has a bite sized price, $7.99, I think it packs more than enough action and fun than some other $9.99 and $14.99 games. The art style is fun and cartoony, kind of reminds us of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the audio is good, with a rocking soundtrack to boot and the game invites you to replay it with it’s mix of secrets, achievements and challenges. What more could you ask for?

Ok well I guess if you had to ask for more I would say it would be nice for some local and on-line co-op. Though we are not sure how this would affect gameplay as it seems to be just challenging enough as it is single-player. While we did die a bunch of times, we never felt cheated and it just made us try harder and harder until we tasted sweet victory. We played and completed the game with an Xbox 360 controller and also tried a few levels with the keyboard and mouse. Both seemed to offer their own advantages, the controller just felt more comfortable during extended gaming sessions while the keyboard and mouse offered more accuracy.

Speaking of the controls anyone who remembers the game Abuse by Crack Dot Com will feel right at home here as it is the same control scheme with the keyboard and mouse, the keyboard moves your character and the mouse controls where your 360 degrees of death are dealt. Speaking of dealing death Serious Sam: Double D adds the Gun Stacker, the ability to stack up to 6 guns of your choice one of top of the other to deal maximum pain. The games weapons of choice are a machine pistol, shotgun, tommy gun, flame thrower, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, xl4 lasergun and the ever fun CHAINSAW! The more gun stackers and weapons you find the more insane combos you can create.

We ended up settling on a dual tommy gun, dual shotgun with a bottom mounted flame thrower and chainsaw combo for run and gun along with dual rocket launchers with an XL4 Lasergun in the middle for larger enemies. But don’t just use our Gun Stacker loadout, go nuts, you have 8 slots to fill with your craziest creations. Our only gripe would be if we could some how add a delayed firing to the guns so that all the shotguns don’t go off at the same time, but really this is being nit picky. And going pack to that two player option we wanted, opening the gun stacker a lot we can see how the other player would be annoyed by doing this all the time. Think about playing Contra, now what would happen if your buddy always paused the game every time they got a new weapon, yeah you would want to kill them real quick.

We had a blast playing Serious Sam: Double D, we ended up playing it 3 times over due to a few system problems and never thought “oh no we have to start over again”. Again I’ll point you to Contra, just how many times have we beaten it, countless, do we ever complain when we start at the beginning, nope. And with Serious Sam: Double D the save system allows you to jump levels you’ve been to unlike Contra. Also a heads up, right now the save system isn’t supported by Steam Cloud but Mommy’s Best Games’ is looking into it according to their forum post. Anyone who loves side scrollers or even people who like games that they can just mess around in should check out Serious Sam: Double D, it’s only $7.99 and you’ll have more fun than that Mocha Frap you were going to buy from the coffee shop, we promise. Still undecided? Check out our video review to see it in action or download the demo from Steam and play it for yourself.
