E3 May Be Over But Unravel Still Has Our Hearts!

Unravel came out of nowhere, unless you happened to go to judges week for E3 and if so we think you’re pretty lucky and also thanks for reading! On the EA stage at E3 2015 Martin Sahlin told the world about how he created Yarny, took him on adventures while camping and those adventures ended up spurring the team of 14 at Coldwood to create the game Unravel. Like Sean Murray from Hello Games it’s both the intriguing nature of their vision for a different kind of video game and the people making the game that come together in a “Shut up and take my money!” moment for us. While there’s no doubt thousands of passionate people making AAA games, small teams that offer up big ideas tug at our heartstrings and you feel like you could be one of them. It’s almost like you could run into them at a Starbucks buy them a coffee and sit down and chat. Here’s the perfect quote from Martin on the Unravel website I wanted to make something more personal, something with more impact. The game didn’t have to change the world, or even try, but it had to be genuine, it had to have a deeper meaning. It had to have heart. Again I know their very different but those are the same feelings I thought seeing Sean and No Man’s Sky for the first time, these games have something more than just a game behind them, there’s passion oozing out of every part.

Unravel will have you using Yarny to the fullest, the Yarny unravels as you move and if he runs out of yarn, you cannot go on. So unlike most physics based platformers where you’re just jumping all around trying to find the best possible route by trying countless solutions you’ll need to think about Yarny and how far can he go without using up to much yarn. It’s a simple little twist but tied back to the main character it instantly clicks and I love it. Also the graphics are serene, tranquil and amazing, I know, graphics aren’t everything but they fit perfectly with the outdoor adventure that Yarny is having in Unravel. Not content with just creating a game born out of the love of exploration Yarny is on this journey to mend a broken bond between a lonely old woman reconnect with what she has lost. I’m not sure if that last part of Unravel is from Martin’s life but it seems a perfect fit, giving Yarny that much more charm. Unravel is listed for PC, PS4 and XO however there is no hard date set as of yet. I hope we get one soon, I can’t wait to check out all the things I can do with Yarny and see what adventures we end up going on.

PRESS RELEASE

EA ANNOUNCES UNRAVEL, A BEAUTIFUL PHYSICS-BASED PUZZLE PLATFORMER

In Partnership with Coldwood, Experience a Heartfelt Story about Love and Longing
Guildford, UK – June 15, 2015 – Coldwood and Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA), today announced a partnership on the development of a new puzzle platformer game titled, Unravel™. Unravel introduces Yarny, a tiny, new character made from a single thread of yarn, who embarks on a seemingly larger than life journey through the breath-taking, lush environments of Northern Scandinavia. Using Yarny’s small thread and big heart, players will traverse nature’s obstacles in this unique physics-based puzzle platformer. To watch the first gameplay trailer and learn more about the game, please visit www.unravelgame.co.uk .

“The idea of Unravel was created from a very personal place. We didn’t start out by saying we’re going to make a puzzle platforming game. We started by thinking more about our lives, and the things we hold meaningful. We wanted the game to have a heart and the gameplay could always be designed to represent that,” says Martin Sahlin, Creative Director at Coldwood. “The tale of Unravel is about love, and the bonds between people. And the yarn is a representation of that. Yarny’s red thread is the tie that connects everything in the game, from the gameplay mechanics to the story, and the people in it.”

Unravel is a game all about overcoming obstacles, both big and small. Some challenges are simple, like using Yarny’s thread to swing across a gap, or rappel down a tree. Sometimes things get more complex, and players will need to use Yarny’s thread in clever and creative ways to find the path forward. Whatever the case, no feat is too big for Yarny. Along the way, witness him unlock a heartfelt story about love and longing, and the ties that bind. The tale is told completely without words and Yarny is the red thread that runs through it all.

Unravel will be available for digital download on Origin™ for PC, the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.
