Get Ready For A Jill Sandwich, Resident Evil Returns!

Well this is slightly unexpected, Capcom has announced that the survival horror classic that ignited a whole new genre Resident Evil will return to PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early 2015. They’re even letting you pick if you want to play through the newly remastered game in it’s original old school 4:3 aspect ratio or in todays more accepted cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio.

Another big change for Resident Evil 2015 is in the controls where once again you can choose to be frustrated by the classic tank controls or a new more current generation third person control scheme. Of course visuals have been upgraded, up to 1080p on current generation consoles, but the control change is the big one for me.

Taking nothing for granted I really hope they do the conversion from the classic 4:3 aspect ratio to the new 16:9 aspect ratio correctly. We should all hope they add information to the sides of those, revolutionary at the time, colorful but static Resident Evil backgrounds instead of cropping off the top and bottom. This is the kind of HD Remake I can get behind, not some game that was just released last year with a few added polys, a real bonafide classic getting redone from the grounp up.

The only thing I don’t like about these new screenshots would be the amount of grain in them. I know Capcom is going for that old horror movie look but I’m hopful we’ll be able to dial in the amount of grain to our preference. Capcom is also touting a new fully remastered sound effects with 5.1 surround sound, as long as they don’t redub or change any of the classic English voice work they can do whatever they want to draw me further into the story. Since there’s no mention about switching between classic and new audio options I’m going to assume all they did was clean everything up, maybe update a special effect here or there. I can’t wait for Resident Evil 2015 to drop so I can finally go back and enjoy replaying a classic game instead of just wrestling with the damn controls.
