Bitmob Has Been Assimilated By GamesBeat

GamesBeat has gone all Borg on Bitmob and assimilated them, however this sounds like a win/win situation rather than a bad on. I’ve always like Dan “Shoe” Hsu since he was with EGM, confusing my younger brain “why the hell would someone’s nick name be shoe?”. We can’t wait to see what these two communities bring once they are fully operational.

GamesBeat Acquires Bitmob

Former Ziff-Davis Media Editorial Director Dan “Shoe” Hsu to head Combined Entity

SAN FRANCISCO, CA January 17, 2012—GamesBeat (www.venturebeat.com/category/games/), the popular gaming site from VentureBeat, has acquired gaming community Bitmob, appointing Dan Shoe” the editorial head of the combined entity.

Dan “Shoe” Hsu—a games media veteran, former Ziff-Davis Media Editorial Director, and Co-Founder of popular gaming community Bitmob.com—will become GameBeat’s Editor-in-Chief. Dean Takahashi, Lead Writer for GamesBeat, and Sebastian Haley, Reviews Editor and Executive Video Producer for GamesBeat, will report to Shoe.

As VentureBeat CEO Matt Marshall said in a separate announcement, “Shoe will oversee VentureBeat’s first channel expansion with GamesBeat, whose coverage of disruptive social game companies Zynga and CrowdStar and established giants Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, will get a turbocharge with the integration of Bitmob.com’s content and passionate community of users in the coming months.”

Shoe added in an exclusive interview with IndustryGamers: “To be honest, I am a little freaked out about being Dean Takahashi’s boss. He’s a well-respected industry veteran, and I’ve been following his work for almost a decade. Who am I to scold him if he doesn’t fill out his TPS reports? But everything worked out nicely. Dean loves writing, reporting, and covering the news beat and doesn’t necessarily have the bandwidth to manage and edit a team of writers. I’ve been an editor for 16 years now and have managed teams at EGM, 1UP, Gamers.com, and Bitmob.com, so that’s a perfect fit. I’m very much looking forward to bringing the Bitmob crowd over and working with Dean and everyone else at VentureBeat!”

Shoe started in games media back in 1996, when he joined Electronic Gaming Monthly as an Associate Editor and member of the Review Crew. In the 16 years since then, he’s held positions up and down the masthead, from Previews Editor to Editorial Director. He’s also been a regular contributor to G4 and CNN Headline News, and he has appeared as an industry expert on NPR, NBC, MTV, The New York Times, USA Today, CNBC, ABC Radio, among many other outlets.
