Razer and Community Raises Over USD$20K for Extra Life Charity

Razer employees, e-Sports teams, and gamers all over the world come together to play games for 24 hours to raise money and awareness for hospitalized children

Carlsbad, Calif. – Oct 26th 2011 – In a world where the video game industry and community is still subjected to widespread ignorance and criticism from mainstream media over issues like addiction or blamed for gun violence, the story of this year’s Extra Life charity gaming event is a shining example of the good games can do for the world.  It is a story about gamers worldwide who came together on October 15th to play video games and donated over a million dollars for kids in need.

Razer, the world leader in high performance gaming hardware, a roster of top e-Sports teams under the Team Razer banner, and on behalf of the wider community of gamers worldwide, are proud to participate for the first time in such a worthy cause, contributing over USD$20,000 and counting for this year’s Extra Life.  Extra Life is an annual 24 hour charity gaming marathon organized by Jeromy Adams and Sarcastic Gamer, with help from the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Razer employees jumped on the opportunity to make a difference, and encouraged friends, families, and a community of over one million fans to donate as well as take part in the charity gaming marathon.  Razer as a company appreciates the charitable efforts of its employees and pledged USD$100 for every one that signed up.

Leading international e-Sports teams also contributed efforts and used their star power to reach out to fans to raise awareness and funds.  Top South Korean StarCraft II team SlayerS donated a thousand dollars.  European team Epsilon e-Sports set up Team Fortress 2 servers where gamers could play against top TF2 pro-gamers and Razer EU staff, and win prizes during the 24 hours of the charity event.  Counter Logic Gaming from North America represented at the Intel Extreme Masters New York over the weekend with the tag “CLG4Charity”.  World of Warcraft’s largest online community and Razer-sponsored MMO team Manaflask with its top-level guilds For the Horde and Ensidia, got onboard with the charity event by playing WoW for 24 hours while raising donations in-game.

Three representatives from Razer joined a party of gamers at the GeForce LAN event on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier over that same marathon weekend and live-streamed their participation.  The response from the community was phenomenal, with the live-stream garnering over 30 thousand views and helped bring in even more donations.

“This is a story that won’t be forgotten.  When someone asks what good can games do, we tell them how gamers around the world came together and raised over a million dollars for children in need,” said Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff, President, Razer USA.  “We tell them that gamers are a force to be reckoned with, a global community that’s closer than ever, uninhibited by geography, culture or race, brought together by a unified love for games.  A community that is capable of rallying around a cause for the good of the world.  And I’m also proud of all the people who work at Razer, proud that they wake up every day to fight the good fight through what they all do best – gaming.”

Although the Extra Life 24 hour charity gaming marathon has ended, the organizers have kept open the donation channels till mid-November.  Razer thanks everyone for keeping the donations coming in at their charity team page www.extra-life.org/team/razer
